Purpose
This study aims to investigate the evolving roles and functions of academic libraries in research universities in Türkiye, with a particular emphasis on their contributions to innovation. This study also explores the awareness of library directors with regard to the development of services that support innovation in academic libraries.
Design/methodology/approach
A qualitative research methodology using a descriptive phenomenological design was used to analyse the new roles of academic libraries and the awareness of library directors. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with library directors from 16 research universities in Türkiye. The research data were extracted from the transcribed interviews. The analysis and coding process were carried out using MaxQDA 2020 software. The data were coded using a deductive approach, and themes and sub-themes were developed to address the research objectives.
Findings
This study revealed that academic library directors at research universities have an awareness of innovation, yet primarily associate it with service development. Challenges, such as financial constraints, insufficient technological infrastructure and limited staffing, hinder libraries’ full engagement in the innovation process. The research revealed that academic libraries contribute to innovation, primarily through resource provision and guidance, but there is a need for greater involvement in key innovation activities, such as patent processes and collaborative innovation initiatives with university research units.
Research limitations/implications
This study is limited to research universities in Türkiye, which may affect the generalizability of the findings. Future research could expand to other types of universities or countries to compare innovation roles in academic libraries.
Originality/value
This research offers a novel perspective by examining academic libraries’ roles in fostering innovation beyond traditional functions and exploring the awareness and perceptions of library directors in Turkish research universities. This study highlights the potential of academic libraries to support innovation more strategically and suggests concrete steps for enhancing their contribution to university-wide innovation ecosystems.
